Lions agree to 4-year extension with linebacker DeAndre Levy

The figures are out for DeAndre Levy’s contract and the Detroit Lions got themselves a bargain.

But Levy, who’s camped in the Amazon and gone sledding down an active volcano, said Wednesday night he won’t be splurging on five-star hotels with fancy sheets anytime soon. “Like, I’ll re-sign if he walks on a plane with me”. “He is an enormous piece to our protection, and with him being on the market, it will make us even higher”.

The Lions are counting on him to lead their Ndamukong Suh-less defense this fall, and they made it clear that signing him to an extension was priority No. 1 this summer. Levy quickly out-performed that contract with the first year, 2013, being a breakout year for him. “I think it’s a tremendous credit to DeAndre that he knew what he wanted and knew that he wanted to be a part of this organization moving forward and we were able to work something out”.

Levy set career-highs with 151 tackles and 2.5 sacks last year, a season after he tied for second in the NFL with six interceptions.

“A guy that’s as productive as he is, he’s quite a talent”, Lions coach Jim Caldwell said, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. “He’s the kind of guy that we like in organization”.

The four years of the extension locks Levy up until 2019.

“It’s good”, Levy said.

Levy now has the third-most lucrative contract on the team – not including Haloti Ngata’s deal with the Ravens – behind Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford.

“He’s a heck of a football player, just a playmaker on our defense versus the run and the pass”, Mayhew said Tuesday.
