Lions bring back Bentley to shore up CB position

Wilson was injured late in Detroit’s 18-16 win over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday and was seen leaving the locker room on crutches following the game.

That had the Lions down to three healthy corners for the end of the game, in Darius Slay, rookie Quandre Diggs and Crezdon Butler.

During a tumultuous stretch that lasted almost a month, they lost two straight games, fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and parted ways with team president Tom Lewand and general manager Martin Mayhew.

To beat Oakland, a depleted secondary is probably going to have to figure out a way to slow down a high-powered passing game with quarterback Derek Carr throwing to wide receivers Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree.

With Rashean Mathis on injured reserve, Josh Wilson suffering a “significant” right knee injury and Nevin Lawson in the NFL’s return-to-play concussion protocol, the Lions are thin at cornerback. Bentley was a third-round pick by the Lions in 2012 and was released in June.

“The situation we’re in, we needed a guy to come in that understands the system – that is capable of playing for us, and playing well, which he’s demonstrated”, coach Jim Caldwell said.
