Lions hire Al Golden as tight ends coach
Golden’s hiring is the second time this week that the Lions hired a recently fired college head coach. He will return to his coaching position for special teams for next season.

Al Golden is unemployed no longer.
As for Golden – a former tight end – he’ll be tasked with getting the most out of Eric Ebron, the Lions’ former first-round pick who’s struggled in his first two seasons, totalling 72 receptions, 785 yards, and six touchdowns.
Former Miami Hurricanes head coach Al Golden has found work in the NFL. Before his time at Maryland, Edsall spent 12 seasons as head coach at CT and also was an assistant at Georgia Tech, Boston College and Syracuse.
Golden has never coached in the National Football League and has not been an offensive coach since he was the offensive coordinator at Red Bank Catholic High School in New Jersey in 1993. He was relieved of his duties following a 58-0 loss to Clemson in October.
Golden is fresh off a four-year stint as the head coach of the University of Miami Hurricanes, where he was not well regarded by fans, but managed the team under the shadow of sanctions and a self-imposed bowl ban.
Serving as Temple’s head coach from 2006 through 2010 before heading south, Golden was named the MAC Coach of the Year in 2009.
