Lions’ Matthew Stafford: Three touchdowns against Saints
“His stats said it all – 22 of 25, which is (near) perfection”, said Detroit receiver Golden Tate, who caught touchdown passes of 1 and 5 yards to help the Lions (5-9) build a 28-3 lead early in the second half and then hang on.

Brees drove New Orleans 80 yards in 15 plays connecting with tight end Ben Watson to end the scoring with the Saints trailing 35-27 with just under 2 minutes left in the game. Matthew Stafford threw three touchdowns and completed 22 of 25 passes in the victory.
Detroit (5-9) raced to a 28-3 lead, but Drew Brees threw two touchdown passes – one shortly after a Lions fumble – to help New Orleans (5-9) pull to 28-20 with 10:06 left.
Detroit entered the game with the league’s worst rushing offense yet ran roughshod through the Saints defense for an average of 6.5 yards a carry, the Lions’ highest figure in more than four years.
With their beloved New Orleans Saints eliminated from the playoffs for a second consecutive season, some ardent fans have suggested the team intentionally tank games down the stretch in order to secure a higher pick in May’s NFL Draft.
And when Detroit’s Ameer Abdullah ran untouched 15 yards around the left end for a touchdown with 3:10 elapsed in the third quarter, the Lions enjoyed a 28-3 advantage.
But Abdullah fumbled on Detroit’s next play from scrimmage, and the Saints capitalized with Brees’ 11-yard scoring strike to Colston.
Tim Hightower appeared to score on a 1-yard run, but officials whistled the Saints for illegal formation as Hightower was celebrating in the end zone. It was the 14 time in 14 games that the Saints have allowed their opponent to average at least 5.5 yards a play. The down was allowed to be replayed and Brees threw a pass to Marques Colston in the end zone. They started fast on us.
After Detroit recovered the onside kick at the Saints’ 45, reached the 9 on a 36-yard run by Bell and was pushed back to the 20 after a couple of kneels by Stafford and a delay of game penalty, it missed a 38-yard field goal attempt.
A video review changed what was initially ruled a touchdown catch by Brandin Cooks, putting the ball on the 1-yard line. “And Tate extended the Lions” lead to 18 points when he caught his second score of the game from 5 yards out with 4:27 left in the first half.
“I felt it was only right that Raiders fans, my fans, fans that have watched me play for a long time, I would let them all know that this Thursday night would be the last time in the Coliseum I would be able to run out there in front of our fans at home”, Woodson said at a news conference.
Brees, who was sporting a substantial limp from the first quarter on, said he was unsure of what happened.
Lions receiver CALVIN JOHNSON set up the Lions for their first points of the game with a reception down the middle for 19 yards to the NO 8 yard line.
The Saints asserted that Kelemete reported on the play before he was penalized and should not have had to report again.

The Lions responded by going 76 yards on nine plays in a drive kept alive by a 10-yard catch by Tate on third-and-4.
