Lions sign former Jets receiver, punt returner Jeremy Kerley

The Lions search for a backup receiver with more experience than TJ Jones yielded results Monday.

Kerley signed a four-year, $16 million extension with $5.4 million guaranteed in 2014. He caught just 16 passes in 16 games a year ago, though, and was released this offseason by NY. Kerley probably figures as a slot receiver and part-time player with the Lions. Kerley had only played previously with the New York Jets, who selected him out of TCU in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Kerley has primarily been a bench player over his years with the Jets, and figures to maintain that role with the Lions behind Golden Tate and recently signed receiver Marvin Jones.

He also visited the Chiefs and Bills this offseason before landing with Detroit. Kerley averaged 80 targets with the Jets from 2012-14, but he fell out of favor with new coach Todd Bowles last season and was cut before free agency.
