The biopic was a hit among critics and fans, and it’s hard to believe this unbelievable film didn’t get a Best Picture nod. This year, it went with eight: “The Revenant”, “Mad Max”, “Spotlight”, “The Martian“, “Brooklyn”, “Room“, “The Big Short” and “Bridge of Spies“.
Out of the acting nominations, there were no great surprises. Well, that ambition will take longer to realize than he anticipated, since The Hateful Eight wasn’t even nominated in that category this morning.
“All white Oscar nominations are another example of the lack of diversity in Hollywood”, the Rev. Al Sharpton said via Twitter shortly after the nominations were revealed.
Actress in a leading role: Brie Larson, “Room;” Saoirse Ronan, “Brooklyn;” Cate Blanchett, “Carol;” Jennifer Lawrence, “Joy;” Charlotte Rampling, “45 Years“. It’s the third straight year she’s been nominated and fourth overall, making her the only person under 25 who’s ever been nominated four times.
He led “The Martian” to an impressive seven nominations, including Matt Damon for Best Actor.
Nominations were announced shortly after the passing of Alan Rickman, famed for “Die Hard” and “Harry Potter” but never Oscar-nominated, at 69. Ruffalo has two previous Best Supporting Actor nominations (for “The Kids Are All Right” and “Foxcatcher”). At least it received six nominations, including recognition for its stars: Cate Blanchett is up for best actress and Rooney Mara for supporting actress. 40 years after Rocky took home Best Picture in 1976, Stallone will probably find himself in the winner’s circle again for his performance in Creed. He wrote the poetic, rat-a-tat dialogue spoken by those acting nominees.
Looks like the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite will be trending on social media again. Fellow Globe victor Matt Damon (The Martian), Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) and Bryan Cranston (Trumbo) will also contend in the best actor category.
As usual, this year’s list of nominees included a few mild surprises, such as Sylvester Stallone’s nomination for best supporting actor for his turn in “Creed”.
Jennifer Jason Leigh as a killer being transported to the hangman in “The Hateful Eight, received her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight”, as did Alicia Vikander, as the wife of an artist who undergoes gender reassignment surgery, in “The Danish Girl, and Rachel McAdams as an investigative reporter in “Spotlight”.
The latest Star Wars installment earned nominations for Film Editing, Original Score, Visual Effects, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing. However, Williams would need 10 more nominations to top the overall record holder. All with horses in the race are 20th Century Fox (“The Martian”, “The Revenant”), Walt Disney Co. Its first original feature, Cary Fukunaga’s West African child war film “Beasts of No Nation”, was shut out.
