Sylvester Stallone has won a Golden Globe for best supporting actor for his turn in the critically acclaimed movie “Creed“, reprising his iconic role of boxer Rocky Balboa.

Citing the crowded categories, Winslet remarked: “What an incredible year for women in film”. Like many honorees, she plowed through the music that not-so-subtly reminds them to wrap up their speeches. Matt Damon won best actor in a comedy for his performance in Ridley Scott’s nerdy sci-fi hit “The Martian”. “Thank you so much to the Hollywood Foreign Press”.

“The Revenant”, starring the best-actor favourite Leonardo DiCaprio, came in buoyed by its $37 million wide-release, good enough to nearly topple J.J. Abrams’ box-office juggernaut, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. Referring to Spotlight, a nominated movie about The Boston Globe’s investigation into child abuse by Catholic priests, Gervais quipped: “Roman Polanski called it the best date movie ever”. Christian Slater took best supporting actor in a TV series for USA’s “Mr. Robot”.

Gervais, who will host for the fourth time after a three-year stint by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, said on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” last week that booze gives him the courage to make his wince-inducing jokes.

“If you do win tonight just remember on one else cares about it as much as you do”.

Streaming services, cable networks and broadcasters all won trophies Sunday, but not the three best-known networks in the business – CBS, ABC or NBC.

Though “Steve Jobs” failed to win over many critics or moviegoers, Danny Boyle’s drama about the Apple co-founder earned best screenplay for Aaron Sorkin and best supporting actress for Kate Winslet, her fourth Globe in 11 nominations.

The Amazon musician series faced major competitors the likes of sibling Transparent, who took home the award a year ago, Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, Hulu’s Casual, HBO’s Veep and Silicon Valley.

That, though, is still very strong for the Golden Globes, which have worked to shed an image of eccentric selections made by a group of little-known global journalists.
