Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp offers encouragement to knee injury victim Joe Gomez

The manager was already reeling from the news that Gomez had suffered the same injury playing for England Under-21s in the 3-0 defeat of Kazakhstan.

England Under-21 coach Gareth Southgate expressed his disappointment at the news of Gomez’s injury.

Christian Benteke is still recovering from a hamstring injury and Daniel Sturridge has played just three times after a series of injuries curtailed his appearances last season. They would obviously look at the creative inputs of Philippe Coutinho to make a difference, but he hasn’t been at his best this season, could Klopp be the one to unlock Coutinho’s potential this season?

“There was definitely disappointment when his time came to an end on Sunday, but I felt that it was inevitable as things have been on a downward spiral for quite a few months”.

Liverpool striker Danny Ings will miss the rest of the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.

But Liverpool legend John Barnes has called for Reds fans to be patient with Klopp as he begins his Anfield revolution.

“As a manager, one of the things I learnt first you do not think about the players who are not available at this moment, because there is no chance to get lucky if you do this all of the time”, he explained with a smile.

“We have to open our chests and run and fight and shoot and defend together and attack together”.

“I want to see more bravery, more fun in their eyes. What a wonderful young boy – tall and muscles in the right positions”, Klopp said at his press conference today. It was not the best day in his life, but I am pretty good at waiting for young players.

With Jurgen Klopp’s arrival at Liverpool, the Premier League has acquired another larger-than-life personality to add to the A-list cast of characters who occupy the dug-outs at England’s elite clubs.

He hailed his physical stature, which has seen him make a strong impression in his first few months at the club, but revealed that he has suffered an ACL injury which Liverpool will have to make “further diagnosis” on after he has surgery.

Ings is yet another blow to an already depleted Liverpool squad who on Saturday take on a Tottenham Hotspur side that is undefeated in their last seven.

“I want to see more braveness”.
