Liverpool boss Klopp wary of pushing Coutinho too hard

Klopp has been in at the helm for 11 games, guiding the team to seven wins, three draws and overseeing just one narrow defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace at the beginning of November.

Coutinho was expected to make his comeback against Newcastle but his recovery is taking longer than expected. Sometimes happens like this.

“He is training. We will wait”. But yesterday nobody gave me that sign.

Liverpool recovered from conceding inside the first minute to thrash Southampton 6-1 away in the League Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday as Juergen Klopp’s impressive start as manager continued.

Origi (20) had not scored in 10 previous appearances since joining up with Liverpool in the close season following his 2014 transfer from French side Lille, where he spent last season on loan.

But he missed that game and was again absent in the thrilling Capital One Cup victory at Southampton, forcing the Liverpool boss to admit he should have been more cautious with the injury. He felt each muscle after the game, which is normal.

England worldwide Sturridge found the back of the net twice in the first half while Derek Origi scored a hat-trick.

Henderson’s return is ideally timed with Can suspended after accumulating his fifth booking at Southampton.

Henderson has appeared as a late substitute in Liverpool’s last two games and he eases himself back to full fitness.

Klopp’s revitalised side are suddenly only six points off the top of the table in “a title race where none of the traditional contenders has really built up a proper head of steam”, says Fifield. I like optimism. But with Phil (Coutinho) we were too optimistic.

“It is a good example to explain how players have to be handled differently because Hendo is a worker and he needs to be absolutely fit and that is the difference, ” Klopp said. OK, that’s how I play tennis but that’s my problem.

“I told him ‘now I know what everybody’s talking about!’ the first time I saw him do it live for me in the stadium”. Could we possibly see more than one piece of silverware coming back to Anfield this season? “That would be good for him and obviously good for us so that is what we did”.

That competition is helping the youngster, who knows he still has plenty to learn from his more experienced team-mates.

Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, who was replaced by Adam Bogdan in midweek, and star centre-back Martin Skrtel have been Liverpool’s other ever-present players. We always do, but it doesn’t work all the time. We came away from Bournemouth and that was two clean sheets and we thought we might have turned a corner.

Klopp: 'Southampton performance was a good one thanks to really, really nice
