Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho clear for Euros selection

A report claims that Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho will face no further punishment in relation to the doping charges that have seen him suspended for the last 30 days.

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho has dramatically been cleared to play for host nation France at Euro 2016 after UEFA decided not to renew his initial suspension pending a further investigation.

Sakho was provisionally banned for 30 days after Uefa, European football’s governing body, opened disciplinary proceedings on 28 April.

The 26-year-old had not been suspended by UEFA or his club, but it was agreed he would not play while until the matter was resolved.

However, UEFA has decided not to extend that suspension, which is due to expire on Saturday, as it has launched its own investigation into whether the fat-burning substance the centre-back took should even be on the banned list.

Liverpool have declined to comment.

Reports had suggested a ban of anything between six months to two years.

Raphael Varane and Jeremy Mathieu have been ruled out of the tournament with injury and been replaced by Adil Rami and Samuel Umtiti.

All Euro 2016 squads have to be finalised on May 31 though Sakho’s inclusion would be controversial given that the disciplinary process into his failed drugs test on March 17 is still ongoing.
