Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius to return to training following broken hand

Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius insists he has no return date in mind.

Karius is unlikely to return to action in September but could be available once again for Liverpool’s trip to Swansea City on 1 October.

The 23-year-old German sustained the injury in Liverpool’s pre-season friendly against Chelsea in Los Angeles towards the end of July but could return to training as early as next week.

Karius was forced to miss the start of the season and was initially ruled out for up to ten weeks after undergoing surgery meaning the keeper was facing being out until the start of October.

He told Liverpoolfc.com: “I had surgery on Wednesday, so now the wires have been removed that they put in four weeks ago”.

Karius was back in training on Tuesday, but obviously was only involved in drills that didn’t require the use of his injured hand as he looks to stay fit and sharp before making his comeback in the first team. It’s up to me now.

“We’re ahead of schedule [and], I am in the last stages”.

Mignolet beware? To be honest, I doubt Mignolet has much to fear right now.

The keeper is unlikely to be passed fit to face Leicester City after the worldwide break on September 10 but as long as there are no setbacks when he steps up his return in training, Karius could be back in contention when Liverpool travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea on the 16th.

“We haven’t wasted any time there, in fact we’ve probably even improved me on some stuff”.

“My fitness level is where it should be, I don’t think I am going to need any time to improve on that, so that will help me to be fit by the time I feel confident with my hand”, he continued.

“My body is there, it’s ready, it’s just the one hand I need to be sure of now and that it’s not giving me any problems”.
