Owen was a free agent before he joined Manchester United on a two-year deal in 2009. He’d spent a season at Madrid, and four at Newcastle United, and he’d never managed to hit the kinds of heights he did in seven full seasons at Anfeild.

You shouldn’t have made a decision to retire, Michael – you just shouldn’t have signed for United. All along he had wanted back in at Liverpool.

“‘Does Rafa want me?’ I’d say”. “Does Kenny want me?” It was circumstance that stopped it happening.

The striker’s agent, Mino Raiola, branded Reds boss Jurgen Klopp “a piece of s***” for his treatment of Balotelli, claiming the Liverpool hierarchy also believed the German was wrong to freeze the Italy worldwide out of his plans.

Liverpool legend Michael Owen has revealed he wanted to re- join Liverpool after a failed campaign at Real Madrid but couldn’t and had to settle for Manchester United who were willingly to give him a contract. By the end, I wasn’t the player I had been before and they simply didn’t fancy me. “People tell me he’s got talent but I can’t remember him having a good game”.

‘I spoke to Carra and tried to get Benitez to do something, ‘ Owen said.

However, the club’s manager ended any hope of a deal being done and Owen joined United instead. But he’d reached a stage where Liverpool clearly weren’t interested and he needed to worry about his career. It was only after his final attempt was rejected by Rafa Benitez in 2009 that he accepted an offer from Sir Alex Ferguson to head to Old Trafford. He was very positive about me. I was 29 years old.
