Talks are ongoing with Newcastle United over the terms of the £25m fee with Liverpool looking to include bonuses in any deal rather paying the significant sum Newcastle are demanding up front.
The 26-year-old Welshman – who was excellent in the UEFA European Championships 2016 – will be leaving the Merseyside club after four years with the club. The 25-year-old midfielder impressed in his debut Premier League campaign despite Newcastle suffering relegation at the end of the season.
The Dutch worldwide completed his move from Newcastle on Friday for a reported fee of £25 million, penning a five-year deal with the Reds.
Rafa Benitez has insisted to the Chronicle that Georginio Wijnaldum’s move to Liverpool was in the best interests of Newcastle United.
Klopp continued: “And to play in our team, you need to play at the highest level – that’s the case for all of them”.
Asked about the prospect of working with Klopp, he added: “A great man – from the outside – because I don’t know how he works yet and I have to work with him”.
Some believe the deal was wrapped up days ago, but Liverpool held back the announcement so it would coincide with the birthday of one of the most famous Dutchmen to grace the Anfield turf.
“He can also play either side in a 4-3-3. I think though, that it was the best decision for him and for us”, he told the Chronicle. If he has the trust of players around him, then he can actually solve any little issues on the pitch.
“It went well, so I played with number five again to see how it worked and it was quite a lucky number for me”.
“This experience gives him a good foundation for the challenge here – which everybody knows is huge”.

And the Liverpool boss reacted: “I really like following the journey of these guys, especially the special players and he’s a special player”.
