Raheem Sterling headed the opener from Kevin de Bruyne’s cross and Yaya Toure’s low 20-yard drive doubled the lead. In his absence, the Chilean manager will have to rely on Demichelis and Mangala to line up alongside Otamendi.

That simply served to spark West Ham into life and the pace of Enner Valencia and Antonio immediately began to cause problems for Liverpool before the pair combined to give the home side a 10th-minute lead.

Carroll might have doubled the lead moments later when he out-jumped Mamadou Sakho to meet Aaron Cresswell’s left-wing cross, before Manuel Lanzini’s explosive long-range shot struck Mignolet’s left-hand post.

Carroll and Mikhail Antonio added to the goals they scored in Monday’s 2-1 win over Southampton and it was enough to sink Liverpool, whose hopes of achieving a top four finish appear slim on the evidence of this performance.

Liverpool tried to force its way back into the match, with Emre Can clipping the bar just before halftime.

Philippe Coutinho sliced through the defence only to be denied by the onrushing Adrian and Noble stabbed the ball off the line after Lucas steered a header towards the far corner as the pressure began to mount with a series of Liverpool corners.

West Ham are now unbeaten in seven Premier League home matches, including three wins, and have not lost at the Boleyn Ground since Aug against Bournemouth.
