Liverpool target Mario Gotze reveals desire to stay at Bayern Munich

Sky sources revealed in March that Liverpool were interested in a summer move for the Bayern playmaker, with Jurgen Klopp reportedly making him his No 1 summer transfer target.

He told German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung: “I don’t know anything about an alleged imminent transfer to Liverpool”.

Gotze struggled to break into the Bayern team last season, but Low believes that Gotze has made the right decision in staying.

With the departure of Pep Guardiola this summer it was expected the former Borussia Dortmund player would be seeking a move elsewhere and Liverpool looked nearly like a flawless fit.

Managing just 21 appearances across all competitions this season, talk has been rife of a move away from Bayern, with rumours indicating a possible reunion with former coach Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. In many ways, heading to Liverpool would have been taking the easy way out for Gotze. It might not be the wisest career choice by the young German, but you have to admire his determination to take the hard road to success.

The 23-year-old, meanwhile, said he wants a new beginning at Bayern.

In an interview with Bild, he states his intent to stay at Bayern next season.

“I’ve been in constant contact with Mario and he’s kept me informed all the time”, Low said at a press conference on Wednesday. “He did this because he wants to show Bayern he is a player of the highest level”.

They were outplayed in the Europa League final by Sevilla, dashing their hopes of Champions League football next season. “That’s exclusively the player’s business, and we treat like that”, he said.

Meanwhile, Liverpool and Klopp have not issued any comments regarding the Gotze saga, and their quiet summer rebuilding continued with the capture of 22-year-old shot-stopper Loris Karius from Mainz on Tuesday.
