Liverpool thump Southampton in League Cup

While the Reds are just four points adrift of the Premier League top four, they have advanced to the knockout stages of the Europa League and will hope to extend their run in the League Cup when they face Stoke City in the semi-finals.

“When you are in the room with him, there’s something and you think “Yeah, definitely”.

Liverpool cruised into the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup as fit-again Daniel Sturridge inspired a stunning 6-1 win at Southampton.

Sturridge took his two goals with aplomb., firing home the first from a tight angle and finishing the second with a first-time finish. He appeared to nonchalantly swipe away a hovering Sky Sports graphic, obliquely breaking the fourth wall between football manager and television audience. The striker’s ratio of wins at Liverpool is over 60 percent, which is ridiculously good, and although he left the field somewhat gingerly, in 60 minutes he showed what he can do and then some.

“We need a good reaction”.

He started alongside Adam Lallana and Origi in a front three, but it was right-back Connor Randall, making his second senior appearance, who threatened to overshadow the striker’s return for entirely the wrong reasons. We sat together, and it is not too often that you agree on everything with a player!’ The German explained.

“I told the referee if he gave the goal to Alberto it would be nice because I like to involve everybody”.

Southampton felt they should have been given a chance to level shortly after when Tadic’s volleyed pass struck Randall’s arm, but referee Robert Madley was unmoved.

Davis said: “It’s important we pick ourselves up now and hopefully get back to winning ways on Saturday and make sure we get a reaction and that’s the most important thing”.

“He has lifted all of the fans, he has lifted all of the staff and you can see that he has lifted all of the players as well”, said Gerrard, who has been training with his old club.

“The second half is my responsibility”.

Phil Thompson says Liverpool can not be discounted in what is shaping up as one of the most competitive title races in recent history. But it’s hard not to ignore the contribution Daniel Sturridge made in turning the tide of the game.
