LNG sale-purchase agreement on cards as PM visits Qatar today

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will visit Qatar from Wednesday to further strengthen bilateral relations in various fields and sign a mega $15-billion deal that will enable the energy-starved country to import liquefied natural gas for 15 years.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will be visiting Qatar on the invitation of Emir of the State of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani and Prime Minister and Minister of State of Qatar Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, said a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Emir of Qatar thanked the Prime Minister for the visit, and said Qatar is second home for Pakistanis.

Qatar and Pakistan yesterday signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) on co-operation in the fields of radio & television, health and academic research. The Prime Minister, accompanied with his delegation, took round of the various sections of the building where he was briefed by the officials.

Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman, the Chief of Air Staff, Pakistan Air Force, will also be part of the high-level delegation accompanying the prime minister. The Sales and Purchase Agreement (SPA) was signed by Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, Qatar Petroleum President and CEO, and Chairman of Qatargas Board of Directors, and Sheikh Imran ul Haque, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of PSO.

The Pakistani embassy in Doha said to mark Sharif’s visit, the Pakistani Air Force will perform a private demonstration for the PM, the Emir and other high ranking officials this afternoon. Al Kaabi described the agreement as “a very important milestone in Qatar’s standing as a reliable energy supplier as it marks the first direct long term agreement between the two companies”.

Other topics of discussion will include employment opportunities for Pakistanis, according to the Peninsula. Both sides share perception on various regional and worldwide issues. Qatar hosts more than 1,15,000 Pakistanis.
