The Eastern Eagles Facebook page is filled with condolences for the Wyatt Barber family, the Meigs County youth football team – Eastern Little Eagles – and the community.
Sheriff Keith Wood said he was unaware of any heart or health issues the boy may have had, adding the county coroner will determine the cause of the third-grader’s death.
Wyatt Barber had just finished running sprints during a youth football league practice when the coach noticed the boy crumpled on the field. “The coach called 911 and began CPR”.
The report said Wyatt was taken to an emergency room and was pronounced dead a short time later.
Wyatt Barber was participating in a non-contact practice at Eastern High School in Reedsville, Ohio. It was a walk through practice only.
“It is a somber mood”, Eastern Local Schools Superintendent Scott Gheen said.
“We have grief counselors working with any students that need assistance and staff as well”, he said. “Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this hard time”. “Fly High Little buddy, WE LOVE YOU”.
A gofundme.com campaign is hoping to raise $15,000 for funeral and other expenses for his family.
The football league is not affiliated with the school district, Gheen said.
The Meigs County Sheriff’s Office is investigating Barber’s death, which is standard procedure in any unexpected death, according to The Columbus Dispatch.
