The day after Black Friday, also known as Small Business Saturday, was created to help boost sales for smaller businesses during the busiest shopping period of the year. With years of experience, Perkins says the best way to be a successful small business owner is to talk to people along with utilizing the resources around you. She says small business Saturday offers another option to shop during the holidays.
“You do know everyone and I think there’s that special attention you get from the owners when you walk in”, Mary Sullivan said, a volunteer for a local business Willow and friend of the owner.
Tucked away in South Anchorage sits a cluster of locally owned businesses waiting for customers. During last year’s Small Business Saturday, consumers spent a whopping $14.3 billion, up 2 percent from $14 billion spent in 2013.
“This is not a spike day of Saturday morning or Saturday afternoon, especially as close to Mississippi State as we are with the big ball game going”.
The National Federation of Independent Businesses has put together an interactive map of some of the store taking part in Small Business Saturday. “And I live downtown, I work downtown, and I really feel like I wanted to give back to that”, Haun said.
“Those are obviously more commercialized so people flock to those first and they advertise themselves”, local shopper Brittney Darby said.
“Personal service. You’ll still be able to find someone to help you find something you’re looking for”.
