Local church hosts Dr. King remembrance service

She adds that if events like this will last for another thirty years, it’s up to them to gain interest and take the torch.

On this 30th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr. day, many across the nation gathered to honor the dream that Dr. King held dear.

The host for the breakfast was WMUR news anchor Shelley Walcott, who spoke about the universal appeal of the civil rights leader.

In true Martin Luther King Jr. fashion, Amarilloans marched a little over a mile peacefully this morning in honor of his holiday.

King’s daughter, Dr. Bernice King, gave the call to commemoration, saying her father provided a blueprint for generations to continue his work, and that people must make up lost ground.

Congress initiated the Martin Luther King Day of Service in 1994.

Many marched, walked and waved their way down East Broad Street to honor Martin Luther King.

“They want to make themselves better”, said Howard.

“It was cold and it was a struggle, but this is nothing compared to what they(civil rights pioneers) faced before so we need to stand that we wouldn’t be where we are without them”, he reflected.

And William Daugherty and his fraternity are here to shed light on King’s legacy.

“Reach back and study the facts of the past”, King said in his speech.

And though 2016 still isn’t the world Dr. King dreamed of in 1963, there’s much to smile about.

“It’s important because if you don’t know you’re history you’re doomed to repeat it”.

“Because they’re underprivileged or possibly living below the poverty lines, doesn’t mean they don’t have the same goals, the same aspirations, the same dreams that we had”, said Brown.
