The disorganized nature of the running mate rollout – in which Trump failed to fully project the power of the partnership – had some Republicans anxious that they could see more of the same at Cleveland. Almost half of GOP voter here backed the NY businessman.

Earlier Thursday, talks between top party officials and social conservatives broke down, which potentially increased the odds of nationally televised clashes next week on other GOP rules.

“Clearly there’s been a reluctance by an establishment class in the Republican Party to get behind Donald Trump”, said the 47-year-old representative from Whitman. “He will be the nominee”, said Bill Lacy, director of the Dole Institute of Politics. He said he has not been approached by anti-Trump forces looking for allies, and wouldn’t join them anyway.

“I think it’s a very important honor and privilege to be representing the 12th Congressional District”, he said.

“I suspect, if he’s smart, he will try to mellow out his message at the convention”, Wright said. “Well the biggest problem I have going to Cleveland is security”. “When we don’t have closed primaries, when we don’t have some system – whether it’s a closed primary or a convention or something that draws a distinction between us and the other people, those who are Republicans and those who are not – we lose”, said U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker and state Republican chairman Joe Nosef.

“What about tax policy?” Priebus mentioned Hillary Clinton three times and the “extreme Obama agenda” before uttering Trump’s name.

He noted that Trump drew an enthusiastic, overflow crowd in a visit this month to the northern Cincinnati suburb of Sharonville, and he said Trump has cross-over appeal that can augment the Republican vote. His appearance comes as party leaders refuse to soften the GOP’s formal opposition to gay marriage.

Mark Townsend is another MA delegate.

Added Secretary of State Kris Kobach, a Trump delegate and his most prominent pre-caucus supporter: “Among the Kansas delegation, there is an absolutely correct perception that the fight is over and the party needs to get together”.

“Some of the things he’s had to say are a little controversial”, Townsend said.

Cuccinelli said he would win enough support – 28 of the rules committee’s 112 members – to be allowed votes on several of his proposals by the full convention. You know what that means?

Baker said he wishes the MA delegates well and offered one piece of advice.
