Last week, after the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools found the school was not in compliance, the department banned ITT from enrolling new students using federal financial funds.

ITT runs more than 130 campuses nationwide, but in MS, the school had only one location with about 170 students.

Department Undersecretary Ted Mitchell said ITT never made a formal proposal, and that the department’s “informal conversations” with potential buyers had failed. But I caution students to look closely at their credits to make sure they fully understand which ITT credits transfer and which do not.

The DOE showed “complete disregard … for due process to the company”, negatively affecting students, alumni and employees, the company said. He’d like to transfer to a community college, but classes have already started. ATC officials also say the application fee to the school will be waived for ITT students.

That statement also points out that if students enroll at other schools that will accept their credits, they likely won’t have federal loans wiped clean.

If you are now or were recently enrolled at ITT, you may be eligible to have your federal student loans for your program at ITT discharged. Or, as US Senator Sherrod Brown explains, they can transfer their credits to continue their education at another college. The now-defunct Corinthian College chain agreed to sell or close more than 90 US colleges in 2014 amid a fraud investigation over advertising practices.

In an editorial, The Wall Street Journal recently called the Education Department’s decision to cut off funding a “lawless execution” and said the action was taken without proving a single allegation. But Mitchell acknowledged Tuesday that officials knew it was a possible outcome. “Ultimately, our responsibility is not to any individual institution, it’s to protect all students and all taxpayers…”
