Local Memorial Day Weekend events

On Monday, May 30, the VFW 1653 and American Legion No. 323 in Granville have an all-day celebration planned. The honor guard will continue the commemoration by taking part in Benld’s ceremony at 1 p.m.

Barnegat Light’s parade is Sunday, May 29, at 6:30 p.m., featuring the Emerald Society bagpipers. The beard contest will be held at 2:15 p.m. followed by the Brass Quintet from “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Corps Band at the Hayes home veranda. The guest speaker is Delavan Assistant Police Chief and Navy veteran Jim Hansen and the emcee is retired Lt. Col. John Looper, with the Rev. Gary Sisk of Harvestpoint Church.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at the American Legion Post #269, 1485 Haslett Road, Haslett.

He is the past first junior commander of the VFW, past chef de gare of the Forty & Eight, a third-degree Mason and Shriner and a member of the Emerald Society and Knights of Columbus.

Fremont’s Memorial Day Parade will be 10 a.m. Monday. The parade location was moved from Michigan Avenue due to construction.

The ceremony will be held at the Veterans Memorial inside the park. No preregistration is required.

The procession will conclude at 9:30 a.m.at the Milton J. Brounshidle Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, 3354 Delaware Ave., Kenmore. There are carnival rides daily.

There will be Lorain Memorial Association service at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Palace Theater followed by showing of “Made of Gold” (which is being previewed). Awards are presented after the parade.

At North School the carnival has an early start at 10 a.m.

Rockford will celebrate Memorial Day on Monday with a parade, a special speaker and a chicken dinner.

Rocky Run Golf Course, Tee Times 7 a.m. – 12 p.m. Friday kicks off with a corn hole tournament. More horse shows on Sunday.

Howell’s Memorial Day Parade, organized by the American Legion Devereaux Post 141, starts at 10 a.m. Monday in front of the Howell Carnegie District Library, 314 W. Grand River Ave. The parade will start at the fire station and end at the Veterans Park where there will be a short program and local vets honored.

The outdoor event includes the singing of patriotic songs, speeches by elected officials and veterans, and a choreographed routine, which commemorates a historical event. Demonstrations are set throughout Saturday on Walnut Avenue.

Observances will be on Monday, May 30. For more information, call Tim Sanken at 320-587-3008. A cemetery decoration, including the adorning of grave markers with small USA flags, will begin Sunday at 5 p.m., followed by the lighting of a memorial watch fire at 7 p.m. The event includes music from the Virginia Symphony Orchestra.

Amherst: The annual Memorial Day Parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday at the North Common, wind its way onto North Pleasant Street to East Pleasant Street, turning into the War Memorial Pool Grounds for the ceremony.

“What happens is we put poppies around the Civil War monument”.

A free luncheon will be served following the ceremony.

American Legion Post 672 will hold its Memorial Day parade starting at 9 a.m. Monday at the American Legion on Memorial Highway. It will travel to the West Union Cemetery for a ceremony and speaker.

The annual Memorial Day Parade begins at 9 a.m. starting at the American Legion and marching to the St. Ansgar Cemetery, where the program begins at 9:30 a.m.

Beacon Hose will conduct a Memorial Day ceremony at 10:30 a.m. outside of the firehouse along with representatives of the Post. Pancake breakfast will be held 9-11 a.m. and will consist of pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, applesauce and beverages. Cost is $3. Visit parks.ohioodnr.gove/marbleheadlighthouse.
