Local political leaders react to Clinton’s VP pick
As governor of the state, Kaine accepted about $160,000 (£122,000) worth of gifts from political supporters, which was legal under the state’s lax gift laws. “April 16th, 2007 was the worst day of my life, and the worst day of so many lives”. Clinton sought to present the partnership as one built in optimism, panning the Republican convention, which ended two days earlier, as a display of “fear”, “anger and resentment”.

Kaine, 58, had always been a favorite for Clinton’s ticket.
By choosing Tim Kaine, Hillary Clinton will get both.
But unlike the famous real estate mogul on the other side of the political aisle, Kaine argued, his heart was in the right place.
The selection of Kaine, a self-described “boring” Virginian with a reputation for low-key competence, could appeal to independents and moderates, but it quickly angered liberal groups that object to his advocacy for an Asian free-trade pact. She again asked for prayers for their Marine son, Nat, who will deploy to Europe this week.
Kaine gave a shout out to St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, his home parish in Richmond and said he and his wife will be home for Mass on Sunday morning. The two will make their first appearance together Saturday at a rally in Miami.
A Republican consultant says these cases send a message about the overwhelmingly Democratic city – and could provide grist for Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans as the general election draws near.
His comments come at a time when some of Sanders’ supporters are expressing disappointment in Kaine, suggesting that Clinton snubbed the left wing of the party.
Clinton also spoke to the University crowd, explaining why she picked Kaine as her running mate. “I sit next to Tim at every caucus lunch and am a big fan”, Klobuchar said.
He and Clinton share support for a number of issues, from a no-fly zone in the air over Syria to gun control, education, health care and a tax overhaul. A good-size Democratic victory in this once-reliable GOP state should be expected, likely larger than President Barack Obama’s 3.9 point margin in 2012.
While Clinton called Obama at the White House to inform him of her decision, Kaine’s aides saw a large clutch of reporters outside and tried to figure out how to leave without attracting attention. She had praised the negotiations while serving as Obama’s secretary of state. Her father was the governor of Virginia from 1970-74. But many say they’re more motivated by a desire to keep Trump out of the White House than by her vision for the country’s future or by her bid to become the first woman to serve as president.
She called Kaine “the proud father of three-grown up kids”, Nat, Woody and Annella.
For Clinton, support and turnout from the state’s growing Latino electorate is crucial.
“There’s no question in my mind, and no question in any objective observer’s mind, that the DNC was supporting Hillary Clinton and was in opposition to our campaign”. “He was a world-class mayor, governor, and senator and is one of the most highly-respected senators I know”, Clinton told CBS News.
“I knew that he was on the short list, but I didn’t know anything about him and I didn’t know much about his background or even where he was from until I heard he was the running mate”, said Diane Fossum of Eau Claire.
Rick Ely, a Miami resident attending the event, said he believed Clinton had made a “safe choice”.
“We’re walking out of here happy”.
