Local reaction to Trump immigration speech
“I just came back from a great meeting with the President of Mexico, where I expressed my deep respect for the people of his country, and for the tremendous contributions of Mexican-Americans in our country – including to our armed services”, Trump told the American Legion convention in Cincinnati.

Brad Parscale, Trump’s digital director, told The Wall Street Journal that the figure, which only tallies online donations of less than $200, does not include phoned-in or mailed-in contributions. The hats are especially ironic considering Trump has insulted the country numerous times throughout his campaign, not to mention his plan to build a wall along the United States-Mexico border.
In an op-ed for El Pais, the Oscar-winning Mexican filmmaker of The Revenant writes that Trump’s meeting with the country’s president was a “betrayal” and “lacks dignity”.
“We all know what Trump’s plans are if he’s elected: build a wall around our border and deport millions of people”, said House Democratic Leader Crisanta Duran. “That will be for a later date”.
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump walks with Mexico President Enrique Pena Nieto at the end of their joint statement at Los Pinos, the presidential official residence, in Mexico City, Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016. “I was very clear and emphatic that Mexico won’t pay for the wall”, Pena Nieto says in a clip included in the video. “Colorado Latinos know better, and they will not stand for his divisive policies”. After a long pause amid a chorus of applause, he continued “and Mexico will pay for the wall – 100%”.
“I believe that mass deportation threatens the American value of families”, she says.
Donald Trump faced a backlash Thursday from some of his top conservative Hispanic supporters who said their hopes that he was softening his immigration policy were dashed by his fiery speech Wednesday night, which they said was anti-immigrant.
Perhaps the most surprising proposal was what appeared to be a new standard for immigrants, based on “merit, skill and proficiency” – a test that critics said would have excluded numerous labourers who were early immigrants to the United States. Much of the uncertainty in the week leading up to the speech centred on how Mr Trump meant to deal with millions of undocumented immigrants who had not engaged in criminal activity.
While he said his administration would “prioritize” enforcement of immigration laws and would not immediately target otherwise law-abiding undocumented immigrants, he said all undocumented individuals would be subject to deportation under his presidency.
