If women are confused, they often will postpone seeing their doctors, Kramer-Mai said.
Another great outcome of these new guidelines is that clinical breast exams are no longer required for women not experiencing abnormalities or symptoms.
The new recommendations affirm that breast cancer screening saves lives, a point that is critical for women to understand.
He conceded that it’s a small number, but it matters if “you’re one of those handful”.
In addition to recommending that screening begin at age 45, the society said that annual exams should continue once a year until age 54, and then be done every two years.
