Location is critical when installing smoke alarms

Clinton Township Fire Marshal Ron Young said that seconds can make all the difference in saving a life or losing one. Half of all home fire deaths in the USA occur between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when most people are sleeping, according to the NFPA.

Bucks County is home to 67 fire departments, mostly all volunteer, so they’ll also be looking to recruit a few people to join their ranks, said Jerry Barton, another recruitment co-chairman. Three out of five home fire deaths are in homes that have no smoke alarms or non-working smoke alarms.

By connecting all smoke alarms, those in a home will hear the one nearest them activate even if the fire has begun in a different portion of the home.

Simons reminds families to have an escape plan and a meeting place for emergencies like a fire.

West Kelowna Fire Rescue will be doing smoke alarm checks and hosting a kids day at their fire station as part of Fire Prevention Week.

The newer smoke detectors come with a built in battery but you should still check to make sure it works once a month by seeing it if chirps or beeps. “Children and adults who hear the smoke alarm’s beep where they sleep have the time to get of a burning residence”.

The Clinton Township Fire Department will promote the NFPA campaign at its annual open house on October 11.

Keep your family safe with a working smoke alarm in every bedroom.

“You double your chances of survival when you have a working detector in your home”, he said.

Lexington firefighters are spending Fire Prevention Week stressing the importance of working smoke detectors.

This year’s campaign includes the following smoke alarm messages: Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement.
