Lockdown at U.S. university after shooting reported in building

Police are responding to shooting at the University of California, Los Angeles.

The focus of police activity was a cluster of engineering buildings near the centre of a campus that occupies 419 acres in Los Angeles.

The campus remains on lockdown.

UCLA is in the Westwood section of Los Angeles and one of the more well-regarded schools in the University of California system, known for its successful sports program.

Sean Lynch, the son of a professor who works in the engineering building, was exchanging text messages with his father as the campus was placed on lockdown.

The shooting occurred in a small office in an engineering building. Final exams are scheduled for next week.

At an earlier news conference, LAPD Capt. Andy Neiman urged people to stay away from the campus. And if an active shooter is on campus, police face an exceptional challenge, Fuentes said.

Update, June 1, 3:08 p.m.: Chief Charlie Beck confirmed in a press conference that the shooting is being investigated as a murder-suicide involving two males, and that authorities believe there is no longer a continuing threat on campus.

LAPD Capt. Andy Neiman said tactical teams with UCLA police, the LAPD and the Federal Bureau of Investigation responded, and scoured the building looking for any suspects.

The university has more than 43,000 enrolled students, according to its website.

Campus media relations officer Rebecca Kendall said Wednesday there are two victims but their conditions are unknown.

The campus was locked down on Wednesday as dozens of law enforcement officials responded, as police said they remained concerned about a potential active shooter situation. Entire campus on lockdown.

UCLA Police Chief James Herren said “hundreds” of officers and agents were on the scene.

Helicopter news footage showed students walking out in a line with their hands above their head, as armed police officers scoured the campus. He said there had not been any reports of bombs or devices.

Kendall said the report came in about 9:55 a.m. “We are safe. Just a bunch of Nursing students”.
