London mayor criticizes Donald Trump during Chicago visit

London mayor Sadiq Khan has accused U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump of “playing into the hands of Daesh”. “We should create the right conditions for new migrants to fully integrate into their new neighborhoods, providing clear advice on our values and expectations”, he said.

He said: “Donald Trump said that Muslims from around the world – I’m paraphrasing – would not be welcome into the United States of America”.

“I think it’s important that the U.S. maintains her role as a beacon for tolerance, respect and diversity”.

Khan said Trump is “playing into the hands of ISIS” by proposing a ban on Muslim immigrants, which suggests that Muslims can’t be mainstream and modern.

“She’s arguably the most experienced candidate to run to be the president”, he told reporters.

Emanuel’s office says Friday’s visit makes Chicago the first US city Khan has been to since he was elected earlier this year.

However, the Mayor said he would be willing to meet Mr Trump during his tour to show the capital is “open for business” in the wake of Britain’s decision to leave the European Union.

He is also stressing the importance of “building bridges rather than walls” – a reference to Mr Trump’s proposal to build a wall along the US-Mexico border.

City Hall aides revealed that Mr Khan would take his message of “hope and unity” to Queens, where Mr Trump was brought up, and where the Mayor will address Muslim American community leaders alongside NY mayor Bill de Blasio.

The United Kingdom, and especially areas of East London which overwhelmingly voted for Mr. Khan, is now suffering from Muslim ghettoisation, horrific employment rates for Muslim women, an internal debate surrounding the banning of the burka, and ongoing issues such as female genital mutilation, anti-Semitism, and homophobia within Muslim communities.

Mr Khan was addressing a global progress summit in Montreal with Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau.

“One of the reasons I’m here is to reassure friends in America, businesses, students, tourists, innovators, investors that London is open”, Khan said.

Speaking with Emanuel across the Chicago River from Trump Tower, Khan took shots at Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, a day after he heartily endorsed his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton in a speech to the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.

He also said the United Kingdom should follow Canada’s lead and do more to help Syrian refugees.
