London’s mayor an exception to proposed ban on Muslims

London Mayor-elect Sadiq Khan said he fears he would be unable to visit the United States because he is Muslim if Donald Trump were elected president.

When asked which Muslims would be banned from entering, Trump’s campaign manager Corey Lewandowki told ABC News the day Trump announced his proposal that “the ban applies to everyone”. “If Donald Trump becomes the president, I’ll be stopped from going there by virtue of my faith”.

Trump put forth the idea of the ban after deadly attacks by Islamist militants in Paris and California past year.

“There will always be exceptions”, the Republican businessman said.

The newly-elected mayor described himself to TIME as the “antidote” to hatred, and said he brings unique experience to the table when dealing with Muslim extremists.

Trump also said he was hopeful Khan would succeed as mayor.

Around the time of his comments on banning Muslims from the US, Mr Trump provoked further criticism by claiming parts of London were “no-go areas” as some areas of the capital were “so radicalised that the police are afraid for their own lives”.

David Cameron branded the idea “stupid” and a petition to ban Trump from entering the United Kingdom raised almost 600,000 signatures. “If he does a good job and frankly if he does a great job, that would be a terrific thing”, Mr. Trump said.

“Clearly [I’ll visit] before January in case Donald Trump wins”, he told Time magazine.

Mr Khan suggested that a trip to the U.S. could include visits to NY and Chicago, whose Democratic mayors, Bill de Blasio and Rahm Emanuel, he praised.
