London’s Night Tube gets off to a smooth start with 50000 passengers

The city’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, was among those to board the first Victoria line service in the early hours of Saturday, the report said.

It also provides a timely boost for new mayor Sadiq Khan, who is running a “London Is Open” campaign with the message that the British capital – where voters rejected Brexit – still has an appetite for global tourism and commerce.

The new service covers the Victoria and Central lines, passing neighborhoods around London such as Notting Hill and Brixton.

The expanded Tube service comes at a good time for London, which has been keen to reassure the world that the city is open for business and ready to welcome tourists despite Britain’s recent vote to leave the European Union.

Marble Arch, at £2.5m, is the most expensive tube stop across the service, with Bond Street (£2.3m), Holland Park (£2.3m) and Notting Hill Gate (£2.3m) also exceeding £2m.

London’s 24-hour Tube service could see some West End shows abandon their traditional 7.30pm start times, the Society of London Theatre has claimed.

Berlin’s U-bahn runs all hours at the weekend, Barcelona metro runs all night on Saturdays, New York’s subway runs 24 hours a day every day, and Stockholm’s metro runs all hours at the weekend.

LU Managing Director Mark Wild said: “Night Tube got off to a superb start last night with thousands of people making use of the new services”.

Mayor Khan said 100 British Transport Police (BTP) officers will be patrolling stations and trains on Night Tube services as part of a package for extra security on all-night trains.

One late night traveller tweeted: “Night tube experience – singing along to Copa Cabana on the iPod whilst drunk boys tried to pole dance”.

He said that the Night Tube is “absolutely vital” to his plans to support and grow London’s night-time economy, and that he had “made getting the Night Tube up and running a priority”.

There is a network of night buses available – but they often run behind schedule, and are far slower than the “Tube”.

“I’m really pleased that 100 days or so after becoming the mayor we’ve got that right”.

London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, has expressed his pleasure toward the system.

Both the Central and the Victoria are operating round-the-clock each Friday and Saturday as part of an expansion of Tube services, with other lines likely to follow next month.

“This move definitely makes London more attractive, though I would visit anyway”, she said.
