Police were dispatched to a call of a possible shooting on the 1700 block of East Hungerford Street at 9:18PM on Friday, September 2, according to Sgt. James Richardson of the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).
Officers responded, set up a containment, and started to devise a plan to deal with the suicidal subject.
About an hour later, a team of officers began verbal negotiations with the suspect. About 10:15 p.m., a mental evaluation team officer and others were positioning themselves in an attempt to negotiate with the man, “who had become increasingly agitated”, the statement said.
Police asked the man several times to drop his “large knife”, but he failed to follow the officer’s orders.
The victim was not struck but a vehicle sustained damage by the gunfire.
The man was declared dead at the scene and a knife was recovered. The coroner’s office will conduct an independent investigation into the man’s death, as will the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.
Police Monday investigated the circumstance surrounding a deadly officer-involved shooting that took place in Long Beach. This investigation remains ongoing.
