Longmont American Legion post preparing for Memorial Day events
Over the years the holiday has expanded to include remembering all those who’ve served the country that have since passed.

At 11:45 a.m., a Memorial Day program will be held at the Solon Springs School and the post caps off the day with a 12:15 p.m. service at Solon Springs Evergreen Cemetery and a 12:30 p.m. service at Solon Springs Catholic Cemetery. The parade will step off at 1 p.m. Regional director for U.S. Sen.
A parade of flags and flowers will start out in front of the Steward United Methodist Church and proceed to the Steward Cemetery for a short program, pausing at the memorial in front of the Steward Elementary School. A program will be presented that honors our war veterans. Eddie Carpenter will be the keynote speaker. The Sparta High School Band will perform under the direction of Jim Walsh. “It’s something we try to honor all the time, but especially on Memorial Day”. Donated veteran flags will be displayed throughout the cemetery as an Avenue of Flags.
Members of the Tahoe-Douglas Elks Club, VFW Post 8583 and the Nevada Division of Forestry placed more than 60 flags on graves and around the park in commemoration of Memorial Day.

Rain canceled last year’s parade, but members of the Marine Corps League, above, along with members of the American Legion, the town council, and dozens of residents turned out for all of the planned memorial ceremonies, flag raisings, and an unofficial parade, above. The breakfast is $5 per person. They also will gather at noon at the Conway Village Cemetery on Washington Street in Conway Village, raise the colors, have a military gun salute and lay a wreath. Mayor Kristie Melendez, Colorado Rep. Perry Buck, R-Windsor, and Maria Secrest, a representative for U.S. Sen.
The event is sponsored and organized by the American Legion. Col. Stan Cass of the Northern Colorado Honor Flight will be a guest speaker at this event.
Steele was the recipient of the American Legion’s Americanism Award according to Dan McPhee, commander for the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The legion auxiliary will serve coffee and rolls at the legion hall in Grant following the service. This annual service, established three years ago, is growing in popularity each year, Pierce said. A parade will follow, ending with a flag ceremony at the veterans memorial at Madison Town Hall.
