Bowie’s new album Blackstar was released just days ago, on his 69th birthday.
During his career, Bowie’s image and sound not only shifted with the times, but also helped to define the epochs though which the artist lived. His 1972 album, “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars”, sold more than 1 million copies in the United Kingdom, and more than 500,000 copies in the United States.
Bowie is survived by his wife Iman, 60, and two children, Alexandria, 15, with Iman, and film director Duncan Jones, 44, with his first wife, Angie, 66.
Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono have paid their respects to David Bowie with touching posts following the music legend’s tragic death.
Scottish singer-songwriter Midge Ure, on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, said: “We are all swimming in his wake, so I don’t think you could top, on creativity, and consistent creativity, I don’t think you could top, anyone could top, David Bowie in the United Kingdom musical history”. “Guys like me with no confidence as a young person [learned] to simply own whatever they did, no matter how goofy it was”.
“In answer to your questions, my real name is David Jones and I don’t have to tell you why I changed it”, the singer wrote to his first American fan in 1967.
“I’ll be offline for a while, Love you all”, he said on Twitter.
Cameron says he grew up watching and listening to the pop genius, and he’s called him a “master of reinvention”. I loved your music.
“Saddened to hear David Bowie has lost his battle with cancer – his music was an inspiration to many”, tweeted British astronaut Tim Peake from the International Space Station.
“David Bowie was a true innovator, a true creative”, Pharrell Williams tweeted in remembrance.
