Make no mistake, when New Line Cinema calls something the Middle Earth Ultimate Collector’s Edition, the company doesn’t mess around.at least, in terms of pricing. Home Entertainment will offer the new collection in two different versions: The Limited Collector’s Edition and The Theatrical Versions Collection.
An ultimate Blu-ray edition of both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies has been announced and is available to purchase soon. According to Amazon.com, we’re getting almost an extra hour of footage from The Hobbit, and 34 hours of bonus features. The boxed set also includes at least two standalone maps, but they’re the same size as the book, presumably for packaging’s sake, so don’t expect to get something big to frame. It’ll be available November 1 and is sure to be a quick way to collect ’em all. All six extended-edition movies come in faux-leather book bindings and are stored in a wood shelf, and it also includes every piece of bonus footage and content already released. Bonus content from The Lord of the Rings trilogy theatrical and extended editions is included on DVD.
To top it all off, each film comes wrapped in a book casing, themselves sitting on a wooden shelf with a compartment to fit a recreation of the Red Book of Westmarch – the book Frodo and Bilbo wrote The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings in. For the rest of us, you can drop about $125 on Amazon to get all six extended films, without the lavish treatment. Additionally, digital copies of each of the films, both theatrical and extended edition cuts, will be included for download on Digital HD.
