The right-hander hopes to build on a breakthrough effort as the Royals look to wrap up their first division title in 30 years Thursday night against the visiting Seattle Mariners.

If everything goes right (a Royals win and a Twins loss), then the Royals will be celebrating a division title around 10 p.m. Follow along at KansasCity.com/sports or on the True Blue app for updates on tonight’s game and any postgame celebration.

The celebration seemed somewhat subdued, but when you are leading by six runs in the game and 10 games in the standings that isn’t unexpected. Cain’s ground-ball single to left scored Alex Gordon, who had walked, and Ben Zobrist.

“I was looking for that pitch”, Marte said.

Musial reached 2,000 hits within his first 11 years. After Ryan Madson pitched a scoreless eighth inning, Wade Davis gave up a homer to Logan Morrison before closing out the victory.

Mariners fourth. Cano singled to left. The Ladner, BC product has struggled since being activated from the disabled list on September 13, going 0-1 and posting a 3.68 ERA.

The Royals got one-out singles from Cain and Eric Hosmer before loading the bases with a walk to Kendrys Morales.

Seattle’s offense was led by Ketel Marte in the leadoff spot; he was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.

DODGERS 6, DIAMONDBACKS 3: Chris Heisey hit a grand slam in a six-run fifth inning and Los Angeles trimmed its magic number to four for the NL West. Sucre grounded out, shortstop A.Escobar to first baseman Hosmer, Trumbo to third, B.Miller to second.

Royals starter Yordano Ventura cruised through the first four innings, allowing just two base runners over those four frames, but got into trouble in the 5th.

Mariners: RHP Felix Hernandez, who exited his victory Sunday at Texas in the sixth inning with elbow tightness, is scheduled to pitch Saturday against the Angels, providing him with an extra day between starts. In an interesting move, Christian Colon pinch-hit for Drew Butera, which meant that both catchers were out of the game. That got the game, and a one-run lead, to Wilhelmsen in the ninth. “When I tried to do it, it’s like, this isn’t working”.

The odds of a Mariners victory lessened considerably in the second inning when James Paxton left the game with torn fingernail. He threw seven shutout innings and struck out a career-best 10. In ten starts with Kansas City Cueto has gone 2-8 with a 5.12 ERA. He has not won since August 15.
