Los Angeles Dodgers calling up top prospect Corey Seager

With San Diego trailing 7-6 entering the eighth inning, Jim Johnson (2-6) walked leadoff hitter Justin Upton before Gyorko followed with his 11th homer. I guess I put myself in that situation, giving up four early runs.

All of this certainly took the edge off the lingering feel-good glow from Wednesday’s masterful performance by Clayton Kershaw in completing a sweep of the second-place San Francisco Giants – and Corey Seager’s impressive major-league debut.

The Dodgers also have a need for Seager in the short term.

OF Scott Schebler was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City. “It wold have been nice to win but I still had fun in my first day”. Probably that first hit (a fifth-inning double in his second plate appearance) was really cool.

I personally thinks he’s going to better then his brother, but being like his brother wouldn’t be a bad thing either.

The much-heralded blue-chip prospect went 2 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI – the tying and go-ahead runs as the Dodgers erased an early deficit with a five-run sixth inning. His next time up, however, he ripped a double into the rightfield corner for his first major league hit, and subsequently scored from third on an infield single off Rea’s chest by another rookie Joc Pederson (Rea was uninjured).

-3B Justin Turner is hitting.342 (13-for-38) in his past 12 games at Petco Park dating back to August 18, 2013.

The bullpen struggles returned after 26.2 innings over the last nine games revealed only two runs. For Friday’s game the Padres start James Shields who has allowed 163 hits and 72 earned runs while striking out 184 over 171.1 innings for a 10-6 record and a 3.78 ERA. He was given the green-light on a 3-0 pitch and promptly singled home two runs to put Los Angeles ahead 5-4.

“Former Trojan star Corey Seager was called up to the Show”.

-INF Jose Peraza was unavailable Thursday night due to hamstring tightness.

“I’m sure it’s something we’ll talk about”, Mattingly acknowledged. “It was a frustrating game”.

Manager Don Mattingly said the right-hander would be in the rotation for at least one turn.
