Los Angeles police officer wounded in city housing project

A Los Angeles Police Department officer is hospitalized after being shot at public housing project in Watts.

The officer was believed to have been shot in the Nickerson Gardens area of Watts on E 111th Street and Antwerp Street around 11 p.m.

It quoted Deputy Police Chief Bill Scott as saying the officer was conscious and rushed to a hospital. “I’m in awe of the courage displayed”. Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck tweeted out that he visited the officer and they are expected to make a full recovery.

“Initial accounts. suggest that our courageous. officers endured a fierce gun battle requiring unwavering courage”, Beck said in a Tweet.

“Officers were on extra patrols in the Nickerson Gardens community housing project”, Eisenman said. One of the suspects was shot and killed. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officer Norma Eisenman says the officer was treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound and released early Tuesday.

During a foot chase, the suspect pulled out a handgun and began firing at the pursuing officer, Eisenman said. A gun was recovered at the scene, police said.
