Los Angeles students returning to school after threat
Garcetti stopped short of calling the threat a “hoax”, which was the preliminary assessment from the House Intelligence Committee, according to Rep. Adam Schiff, a Democrat who represents parts of L.A. and is on the committee. Holly Huffman of HISD says the email came in a little after 8pm.

“Unlike Los Angeles and New York City, a threat was not sent to San Diego officials”, he added. “Basically, watching “Homeland” episodes that it mirrors”. The source of the threat that led Los Angeles to cancel classes Tuesday remains unknown, but the district’s response reflected lingering unease over terrorism.
The move to have police officers in schools today comes out of “an abundance of caution”, Beck said. More than 1,500 schools were affected.
“As we were kids growing up – I’m 51 – we always had the notion that it was a childish prank”, said Hwang, a Republican.
“There certainly is no uniform approach”, he said. “In fact, NY already had their kids at school”.
At the end of the NY email, the sender also threatens nearby cities by name, exactly the way the sender threatens other nearby cities in the Los Angeles email.
New York Police Department (NYPD) Police Commissioner William Bratton said the email had questionable errors, noting that “Allah” was never capitalized in the multiple times it appeared. And there is nothing you can do to stop it. But California officialdom – both in the law enforcement and political communities – erected a solid front in support of the 83-year-old Cortines, who is due to retire next year, as he’s done once before.
Officials declined to reveal the details of the email, citing an ongoing investigation, the Chronicle reported.
The anonymous writer claimed to be a student at a district high school who had been bullied.
Los Angeles school officials made the right decision Tuesday to close all the city’s 900 schools in the face of a threat they believed had some credibility. The Los Angeles Police Department was notified that night about the “specific” threat, which involved explosive devices and firearms, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said.
According to Jason Spencer, HISD chief of staff, the district spoke with superintendents in Dallas and Miami, who said they received similar, possibly the same, email threats. Students are heading back to class a day after an emailed threat triggered a shutdown of the va…
The decision to close Los Angeles schools was announced around the same time, at 6:25 a.m. PST.
Bratton called the closure a “significant overreaction”. “These threats are made to promote fear… we can not allow us to raise the levels of fear”. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said: “It’s important – very important – not to overreact in situations like this”.
The sudden closure disrupted the routines of many Los Angeles families. You see, my last 4 years here at one of the district high schools has been absolute hell.
“I have the power, as superintendent, in emergencies, to recommend that the district be made whole”, he said.
“All L.A. Unified schools and charters have been inspected, and Chief Steven Zipperman has given the all-clear”, Superintendent Ramon Cortines said. But there were many schools.

Beck said the actions taken on both coasts were valid.
