Lottery fever as record United States jackpot soars to US$800m

Gary Grief, executive director of the Texas Lottery, says officials with the Multi-State Lottery Association raised the estimated jackpot for Saturday night’s drawing again because of strong sales – but that the $800 million prize could rise again before Saturday’s drawing.

“I’d be so happy for them”, Culver said. If the current pace of ticket sales continues, it should hit $1 billion by the drawing on Saturday night.

With Saturday evening drawing near, it seems more and more people are snatching up Powerball tickets, as the jackpot has grown to $800 million in just one day.

To win the grand prize in Powerball, a participant must match five numbers between 1 and 69 and a sixth number between 1 and 26 drawn separately.

A Portland man has won a $1 million Powerball prize, good for $670,000 after taxes, according to the Oregon Lottery.

These tickets are a hot commodity right now, but when Powerball sales go up, stores that sell them need to do things differently.

“I probably would pass out for them”. And some statisticians say the pot could still grow to a billion dollars.

Since the state started playing Powerball, 10 winners have been from Florida, two of them from South Florida.
