Louis concert amid protests over police officer’s acquittal on murder charge

On Twitter on Monday, the group said: “We are human and we will make mistakes”.

The St. Louis Police Department tweeted Friday evening that the protests were “no longer considered peaceful”, as protesters threw bottles at officers, smashed police vehicle windshields, largely ignored officers’ requests to clear a roadway – ultimately leaving at least four cops with minor injuries. Hundreds of people marched through downtown streets, the posh Central West End and the trendy Delmar Loop area of nearby University City. We will be nonviolent but we will not settle on peace.

St. Louis was also the scene of violent protests in 2014 following the police killing of black teenager Michael Brown in the suburb of Ferguson.

Although many, like Smith’s mother, were hoping for a guilty verdict, protesters were ready to demonstrate in case of the opposite outcome – which could’ve been expected. “We’re in control. This is our city, and we’re going to protect it”, he says.

The Republican governor warned Sunday on Facebook that the authorities will not let property damage go unchecked.

Cory Bush, the social worker who organized the die-in, told the crowd assembled Saturday that media reports focused too heavily on the vandalism from the night before. The area is known for restaurants, shops and bars.
