Numerous mourners wore shirts that had the prominent hashtag #PhilandoCastile on them, others with “Rest in Peace Philando” emblazoned on the front.
“You know Black people can give blood to white people and white people can give blood to Black people, so if we can exchange blood, why can’t we exchange love”, challenged Daniels”.
The kind words were shared along with happy memories at JJ Hill Montessori Thursday, following Castile’s funeral at the Cathedral in St. Paul. The letter, dated June 4, 2015, says Castile’s permit is enclosed.
Rev. Dr. Steve Daniels Jr. of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church addressed the controversial events leading to Castile’s death in the eulogy. It’s been a week since his Castile’s death and emotions are still running high in the community.
The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis says Castile’s mother, Valerie Castile, requested the cathedral hold her son’s funeral. Her 4-year-old daughter, who was in the back seat of the auto during the shooting, played outside the cathedral before they entered. Shirts in the pews read, “I can’t breathe”, “RIP Philando” and “Black Lives Matter”. “Well to us he resembled royalty”, said Hines.
She says that Castile alerted the officer that he was carrying a firearm while reaching into his back pocket, after having first had his hands in the air, the New York Times reports. But you making some noise now Baby!
His fiancee streamed the shooting aftermath live on Facebook. So I think it’s going to bring the community closer in a way. And more than 1,000 miles away, federal investigators are looking into another police shooting: the death of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
“In this year we are asked in a special way to try and show forth the merciful face of our God to those in need, those who mourn, those in need of healing, and to welcome into our churches all who hunger and thirst for the Lord’s tender mercy”, he said.
“Everyone needs to protest in the right way – with peace, not violence”, he said.
Yanez’s attorney has said the officer reacted after seeing a gun, and that one of the reasons he pulled Castile over was because he thought he looked like a “possible match” for an armed robbery suspect. The system is broken.
“He’d sit down and talk to them individually if they had problems with other students”, Dennis Sear said. “We have been very careful to say this is one police officer who made a mistake and did something wrong”.

Court and driver records show Castile was pulled over or ticketed at least 52 times in Minnesota since 2002, with 86 total misdemeanor or petty misdemeanor counts.
