Louis Van Gaal: Manchester United Players Need to Take More Responsibility

Manchester United are set to begin this season’s FA Cup campaign with a match at Old Trafford, and fans and players alike would love to see this season end with them adding a twelfth FA Cup title to the team’s trophy room.

Speaking after the game, van Gaal said: “We can improve but how many chances have Sheffield United created?”

“The players looked bored themselves”. There’s no spirit, there’s nobody having a go at each other, there’s no smiling, there’s no entertainment. Look at Van Gaal on the bench – he looks bored but he’ll come out and say he was happy with it. It wasn’t a great performance.

It would take me two or three days to get over that performance. The referee is doing well, I think, in the first half there were three minutes’ injury time and, in the second, also extra minutes.

The Dutchman conceded his players would benefit from playing with a higher tempo, but questioned why Nigel Adkins’s League One side were not facing similar scrutiny for only producing two shots on goal.

“It’s time for a change in style of football. Juan Mata is a very good player but he is not a right-winger and that is why I brought him off and put Memphis Depay and Jesse Lingard on”.

His Man of the Match display was applauded by all and Van Gaal is now realising how key his summer signing is becoming.

Although Manchester City are favourites to appoint Guardiola, who announced earlier this week he will leave Bayern Munich for England in the summer, Old Trafford remains a possible destination.

The 20-year-old can play anywhere along the backline but he is most prominent at centre back but with the current back four at United, he has fallen out of the pecking order.

“It was a good effort, it’s just a shame we couldn’t force the replay”.
