Louis van Gaal preparing Manchester United for ‘must-win’ clash with Stoke
Louis van Gaal has admitted that Manchester United’s Boxing Day clash with Stoke City is a “must-win”.

However, Rooney, who has suffered from his own patchy form this season, came out in defence of Van Gaal on Thursday.
Despite disapproving of Van Gaal’s methods, Kanchelskis said United must wait until the summer if they want to change managers.
The Dutchman walked out of his news conference on Wednesday following intense media speculation surrounding his position but Rooney is adamant the squad is firmly behind the former Barcelona boss.
“We’re working hard and fighting for the manager to try to get results and turn the season around”.
The club is fifth in the table, below fourth-placed Tottenham on goal difference but nine points behind surprise leaders Leicester.
“Of course we haven’t won games in the last few weeks and it’s normal the confidence will be a bit lower”.
Van Gaal responded at the break by replacing Depay with Rooney, and it was the England skipper who created the 62nd minute opportunity that would have got United back into the game.
Information from the Press Association was used in this report.
“If I listen to all the press conferences of Van Gaal lately I think he is in a stable situation”, he said. “It’s important we all stick together”.
But he claimed he has received support from Woodward, former manager Sir Alex Ferguson and former chief executive David Gill in the wake of Saturday’s damaging 2-1 defeat to Norwich at Old Trafford. “We have to be strong and get through it and get the results we need”, he added.
“It’s tough for the players to deal with”. “We need to prepare well, concentrate throughout and give our fans the kind of performance they deserve”. We get hurt because we’re proud people and proud to play for Manchester United.
Like Van Gaal, Rooney has received plenty of criticism this season after netting only twice in the Premier League.
“It’s tough, but it’s part of football and part of being a footballer”. “As a group of players, we know we can do better”.

“Has anybody in this room not a feeling to apologise to me?” he began, having been asked about Arsène Wenger’s comments that it was “disrespectful” to see so much speculation.
