Louis van Gaal says he won’t resign
Earlier this week, there were reports that Van Gaal had twice offered to resign, but was rebuffed by the United hierarchy.

Juan Mata and Anthony Martial hit the crossbar and the post, while Thibaut Courtois denied Ander Herrera from point blank range and Wayne Rooney missed from six yards late on.
The two goalkeepers helped their sides keep clean sheets as Louis van Gaal pressure continues to mount at the theater of dreams.
However, despite the home side’s improved performance, some on social media weren’t convinced Van Gaal was the right man to take United forward. Red scarves with Mourinho’s face on them were being sold by unofficial vendors outside the stadium before kick-off.
One United fan had turned up with a banner which read “LVG: Leave, Vanish, Go” so the frustrations in the stands can not be overlooked.
The opening half was Man United’s most encouraging display of the last few weeks and it was a performance they craved for in order to resuscitate their hopes for 2016.
Van Gaal admits he is powerless to stop the board acting if they want to make a change, but he did not seem terribly anxious about his future and welcomed the support of the fans during the match.
‘I can not have any influence on that. He was also applauded down the tunnel after the final whistle by fans in United’s Stretford End, a positive sign despite the frustrating result. I can not say that I am very much concerned, but in this football world you never know.
“I have said that when the players are fighting for me, I stay, because that is the most important thing and you have seen that (they are)”, the United manager said.
“I think it was a very good performance but you have to score a goal and we didn’t”, he said. I’m pleased because we had some good opportunities in the second half. We were the dominant team, we created chances, we shot on goal and only gave three chances away. Nemanja Matic might wake in a cold sweat when he thinks of his wild finish after Chelsea had broken from defence and opened up their opponents on the counter-attack.
The Dutchman’s only disappointment was with referee Martin Atkinson, who failed to award United two penalties. The temptation to aim the ball high was removed and United, passing the ball with an increased tempo, began the game as though affronted by the accusations of repetitive dreariness. It was their best 45 minutes for some time.

With Guus Hiddink back in interim charge of Chelsea following Mourinho’s departure, the ship has been steadied, but the Blues are in a mess nonetheless.
