Louis van Gaal: Shaw in good spirits despite horrific double leg break

United begin life without Shaw against Southampton on Sunday and Van Gaal admits he is still considering who will come in at left-back.

The surgery was a standard procedure to close the wound suffered in the first half of the 2-1 Champions League defeat at PSV on Tuesday night. “He looks OK. He’s strong mentally and I’m sure he will go back and work every day to come back as soon as possible”.

“Wayne is fit to play“, the manager revealed. “So we’ll see what the reception is but we parted on good terms”.

The chances of Shaw playing again before the season’s end are still slim, something that would at least enable United to monitor the player over next summer instead of losing him to the European Championships with England. All the players, all of his colleagues, have called him and that’s maybe not good [if he needs to rest].

With Shaw out for the foreseeable future, van Gaal also has a tough decision to make over who will play at left-back.

“Shaw’s injury is a big loss but Rooney is fit to play versus Southampton and Jones has trained with the group”, the coach told reporters on Friday.

Leeds United wonder-kid Charlie Taylor is now heavily linked with a move to Premier League giants Manchester United after a bad injury of United’s player Luke Shaw.

Quizzed on United’s defensive cover for Shaw, the boss continued: “It’s a great loss”. Daley Blind claimed that the injury affected the whole team for the rest of the match as it took an emotional toll on the side. However, he is “not match fit” so needs more time to train.

Post-match, Moreno expressed his sorrow that Shaw would be out of action for the forthcoming months. Memphis and Shaw were a very combination and now you have to build up a new combination.

“He’s much better today, but it is always hard when you have that type of injury”.

“It was hard to continue the game, because I had that pain myself one year ago and I also know how hard it is for the family, for everyone concerned”. “In [Daley] Blind, [Marcos] Rojo and [Ashley] Young, we have good replacements”.
