“We still have about one in 10 babies in Kentucky that’s born preterm each year, and so we would really like to continue to decrease that number”, she said. “Until we do, we will be at risk of hitting a point of diminishing returns in our efforts to prevent premature births”. Premature birth is the No. 1 killer of babies and many of our families still face that fear.

Among states, only Idaho, Oregon, Vermont and Washington earned an “A”.

The state of Utah earned a 9.1 percent scored a “B” grade on the report card. Six states were graded “D”.

March of Dimes announced today that the State of New Mexico has received a “B” grade on the 2015 Premature Birth Report Card.

Five cities in the region – Portland (7.2%), Eugene (8.0%) and Salem (8.1%), OR; Seattle (8.1%) and Vancouver (7.7%), Washington – earned As for their preterm birthrates.

The report also gives each state, as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, a “disparity index” ranking, which is based on differences in preterm birth rates across racial and ethnic groups.

The study looks at the birth rate across the nation, but it dove into what’s going wrong in cities as well as ethnic groups.

“States like Louisiana have a lot of challenges”. “It has to do with the ability to access care”.

“I’m not happy with numbers in Tallahassee, but I’m glad we’re discussing low birth weights”, said Whole Child Leon Executive Director Courtney Atkins, whose organization promotes healthy childbirth.

Larsen: “The birth spacing is something we’ve been working on educating through providers”. There are large gaps in the preterm rate between California communities, it says.

“We have women of childbearing age binge drinking or having pregnancies that are closer than 18 months”, she said.

The US preterm birth rate ranks among the worst of high-resource countries, the March of Dimes says.

But, the March of Dimes said the state hasn’t kept up with its tougher standards, which account for new technology and health care techniques. They offer a tool kit that can help hospitals improve their outcomes.
