Louisville soccer knocks off No. 1 Notre Dame
The Irish (6-1-0, ACC 1-1) fell for the first time this season losing 1-0 to ACC foe Louisville in a game that seemed to go Notre Dame’s way in almost every aspect of the game.

Notre Dame’s Jon Gallagher and Thomas Ueland led the way with three shots each.
A first-half goal from junior forward Mohamed Thiaw propelled the Louisville men’s soccer team to a 1-0 upset win over No. 1 ranked Notre Dame Friday night at Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium, handing the Irish their first loss of the season in the process.
Thiaw’s remarkable goal came in the 25th minute after a lovely long ball from junior Joey Kunkel. Hubbard stretched in the attempt to save, but the ball fell just under the crossbar for Thiaw’s fourth goal of the season. “I looked up and saw the goalie off the line, so I gave it a try, and it went in”.
Notre Dame began the second half with two more corner kicks dished out by Panken, but again, the Irish could not find a way to make them count against Louisville’s stout defense. “He was good all night, but that one in particular”.
Graduate student Stefan Cleveland registered his fifth shutout of the season.
Notre Dame’s best scoring opportunity came in the 85th minute on the foot of Jon Gallagher who fired off a shot from inside the box.
Friday’s match marked the first time this season Louisville has not out-shot its opponent as Notre Dame finished with a 6-3 edge in shots, including a 3-2 margin on goal.
After two coaching changes since then, Dino Babers will lead SU looking for the school’s first victory against the Irish since 2008.
