Love chooses Fowler, Holmes, Kuchar for Ryder Cup

United States captain Davis Love III named Rickie Fowler, JB Holmes and Matt Kuchar on Monday as three of his four wildcard picks for this month’s Ryder Cup against holders Europe in Chaska, Minnesota.

Holmes finished 10th in the Ryder Cup standings and is one of the few active Americans to have never lost in the event.

The Northern Irishman was always likely to pick Briton Westwood and German Kaymer following their heroics in previous Ryder Cups, however Luke Donald was strongly fancied to get the final berth in the team.

“There were questions as late as last night”, Love said. “We’re really confident in them and we’re excited to have our 11 players now”.

“I am so happy to see how well he has thought this through”, Mickelson told GolfChannel.com’s Ryan Lavner about Woods’ involvement in the details of the biennial event.

Holmes previously played on the USA team in 2008, the last time the Americans won.

The biggest name not announced on Tuesday was Bubba Watson.

The Ryder Cup takes place from 30th September – 2nd October at Hazeltine National Golf Club. It seems as if Jim Furyk, who also missed the Tour Championship, will be left out.

Eight players had previously qualified for the US team on points.

The three join the eight players who automatically qualified for the team, which includes newly crowned BMW champion and the favorite to win the FedEx Cup in two weeks, Dustin Johnson. The rest of the team is Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson, Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia, Danny Willett, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Rafa Cabrera-Bello, Chris Wood, and Andy Sullivan.
