Lovren eager to forget Rodgers era as Liverpool look forward with Klopp

“I wasn’t here before”.

Dejan Lovren will be one of the centre-backs to start, having regained his place following Sakho’s knee injury. The Croatia worldwide refused to criticise Rodgers for past results or his own indifferent form since a £20m arrival from Southampton in the summer of 2014. After the Crystal Palace game I made some comments about supporters leaving the ground after we fell behind for the second time and I want to use these notes to clarify my point. It was not just the manager’s fault. “I want to forget it and just concentrate on the future”.

While Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has started to irk the public with his constant moaning and frosty exchanges with the media, Klopp approaches press conferences with humour and a toothy grin.

Some could say that it is too soon to speak of Klopp’s success at Liverpool, but his philosophy has worked magic back in Borrusia Dortmund, who gave Bayern Munich a run for their money, and even winning the Bundesliga on a number of occasions. My decision [on the team] you will see tomorrow but the most important thing is he can train without problems. “Skrtel is a little ill”.

But the impact of a new manager tends to fade before long and perhaps Klopp’s influence has already peaked.

The unexpected 4-1 upset of Manchester City this past weekend, a match every bit as one-sided as the score indicates, inspired more positivity as well. Boss Jurgen Klopp will be hoping to get the job done as quickly as possible, with a trip away to FC Sion still to come on match day six. “The most important thing is to go step by step, not look forward eight games”, mused Lovren before acknowledging the added stress that comes along with being a player that’s under the microscope.

“Going into the next few games, for the confidence and for all the players, it will help us”. “I’ve said that he is a goalkeeper who is a great shot stopper, but he is not the overall package”. I came here to be a standard player of Liverpool, not to be on the bench. I’m more complete, with more confidence and different experiences to learn from. “The team performance was top class and now we need to carry on in this way”.
